It’s normal to have doubts when running your own business, but letting those thoughts take over is your road to failure. Letting a little phrase (or similar thoughts) pop into your head every time you have an idea may delay the implementation so long you can’t make any progress.
How many times have you had an idea for your business and you immediately thought, “I can’t because?” That is a common phrase many people use to justify their decision to do nothing. They’re afraid of failure; they’re duplicating the thoughts of friends and family who try to help them; they’re comfortable in their current zone so why upset the apple cart? None of these common reactions to ideas will help you grow your business or move forward.
To get back on track, eliminate those words from your vocabulary. For instance, if you’re constantly saying, “I can’t because,” delete that entire phrase. We can all think of reasons we can’t do something because of something else. Maybe there’s not enough time, or not enough budget, or not enough staff, or you don’t have the skills, but that’s just a bunch of excuses. You are only limited by your imagination – you’ve heard that before, right?

We Learn from Failure
What most of us haven’t realized is that failure is what makes success. I’m sure you’ve heard about the business failures some successful people have had… they failed two times before getting it right or something similar. Have you wondered how that happened? These people learned valuable lessons from failure that they use to change their future. Nobody ever won by doing nothing and nobody ever won by not learning from their mistakes. These small failures are what force you to learn and take corrective action, so don’t ever be afraid of failure.
Now I’m not saying to forge ahead without considering the risk. You should always assess the situation and perform the necessary risk assessment to reduce your exposure.
Change the Phrase
Here’s a new phrase to add to your head talk… “How can I?”
Changing the script from, “I can’t because” to “How can I?” shifts the energy from negative to positive. It also puts it out into the universe and opens you up to receiving the answer. When you ask, “How can I get this done when I don’t have enough money,” your mind remains open because it’s waiting for the answer. You can go about your business while the universe is working on the answer.
You’d be surprised how many times I’ve done this when the answer started showing up in many different ways. My answers came to me in emails, in articles, in something somebody said, etc. What I mean is, I started receiving emails and articles with the same issue I was looking to resolve. This stimulated me to then sit down and start brainstorming how I could resolve my issue with the new information I had acquired.
If you let those three little words, “I can’t because” rule your life, you will never be able to grow your business. In reality, those three words may be what puts you out of business!
