At the end of my first year in my house cleaning business, I had over $100,000 in revenue. You don’t get to this number by doing all the work yourself.
If you want to have a small business where you can schedule jobs and work just when you want, that’s fine, but don’t expect the same income. Be realistic about your business and the goals you have for it and yourself.
The first thing I did once I had my business setup the way I wanted, I started looking for workers. Here’s what I did to setup my business:
- Found a janitorial supplier for my cleaning products
- Invested in all the equipment I would need to do the jobs I wanted
- Created the business forms I needed to run my business
- Placed advertisements and flyers in the areas I wanted to service
- Started getting customers and ongoing clients to fill my schedule
- Researched how my competition advertised for workers
- Started advertising for workers
- Setup interviews
- Hired workers on 2-week temporary basis to make them earn the job
Where to Find Workers
I’m sure you’re already using your local papers and online resources, but lets take it further and get creative…
1) Women’s Crisis Centers – Many of these women need to find a job. Work with the management in these centers to determine how your business needs can be met.
2) Recruit at Senior Centers – Need someone to do the office work? There are many people at the senior centers that would appreciate having something useful to do. You might just find the perfect part-time senior to take incoming calls and run your scheduling!
3) Parents Without Partners – Here’s another group of people who might know someone who needs work. This could turn into a gold mine for your business.
4) Social Service Agencies & Churches – Another good source for people who would be willing to work for you. Look into these to find out how to go about finding recruits through them.
5) Shopping in Your Neighborhood – How many people do you run into who express dissatisfaction with their job? These could be people working at any of the stores and shops you visit. Don’t be afraid to solicit them, especially if they dislike the boring or inactive job.
The best thing that house cleaning has to offer employees is regular activity, so it certainly has benefits over the traditional desk job or standing at the cash register. Don’t be shy to use this when looking for workers.
